Liverpool Football Club is one of the most successful European teams and has featured an array of world-class players, so there have been some quality goals over the years. From the electrifying atmosphere at Anfield to iconic away games, some efforts stand out more than the others.
These have not only defined matches but have also shaped the history of the club. Here, we recall some of the greatest goals ever scored for Liverpool.
Steven Gerrard vs. Olympiacos, 2004
Liverpool went into their final Champions League group stage game against Olympiakos knowing they needed to win by two goals to qualify for the knockouts. With a 2-1 lead, it looked like they would fall short as the end of the game approached.
However, Steven Gerrard’s 25-yard volley in the 86th minute secured Liverpool a place in the knockout stages. Neil Mellor’s header bounced to Gerrard, who unleashed a memorable half-volley into the back of the net.
If it were not for this thunderbolt in front of the Kop, the epic final victory against AC Milan in Istanbul would have never happened.
Mohamed Salah vs. Tottenham, 2018
During his phenomenal debut season, Mohamed Salah showcased his deft dribbling skills with this goal against Tottenham. Picking the ball up on the right flank, Salah weaved through the Spurs defence before scoring into the far corner.
The solo strike toward the end of the match was a standout moment for the Egyptian, providing a glimpse of the brilliance that was still to come in his career.
Dominik Szoboszlai vs. Leicester City, 2023
Dominik Szoboszlai’s spectacular second-half strike against Leicester in the Carabao Cup third round demonstrated his powerful shooting ability. From well outside the box, Szoboszlai unleashed a fierce attempt that flew into the net, leaving the keeper stranded. It garnered praise from manager Jurgen Klopp, who described it as a “super goal.”
This finish not only excited fans about his potential but also made his jerseys a hot item among supporters.
Luis Garcia vs. Chelsea, 2005
In the Champions League semi-finals, Luis Garcia scored what is famously known as the “ghost goal” against Chelsea. As fans were pleading for a red card, Garcia saw an opportunity to direct the ball towards the net, which then deflected off John Terry. William Gallas sprinted back to make a desperate clearance on the line, but it was too late and Liverpool advanced to the final in Istanbul. The controversy over whether the ball crossed the line remains to this day.
John Barnes vs. Queens Park Rangers, 1987
John Barnes’ career-defining goal came against QPR in October 1987 on home soil. Receiving the ball on the left, he danced past multiple defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom corner. The 4-0 win moved the Reds to the top of the table, replacing QPR.
Barnes’ balance was even more impressive given his 6ft, athletic build. The graceful footwork was undeniable and a rare occurrence in the beautiful game. What followed for him that season were the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards and 15 league goals.
