Three major managers have rejected Bayern Munich so far and now, in a major scramble, the Bavarians have turned their attention to Manchester United’s current manager Erik ten Hag.
Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and now Ralf Rangnick have rejected the chance to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of this season and as per Christian Falk, the club’s management has discussed going for ETH. The current United boss is familiar with the setup at Bayern having been the manager of the reserve team from 2013 to 2015.
The Man United manager has endured a really tough season with the Red Devils and even though they have reached the FA Cup final, United look set to miss out on Champions League football next season. If MUFC cannot hold onto their UCL status then Erik ten Hag will surely be sacked and if everything falls into plan then the 54-year-old could replace Tuchel.
Will Erik ten Hag be a sensible choice to be the next Bayern Munich manager?
Ten Hag’s job has been in danger for a few weeks now because the Man United management is on the hunt for a new manager so by the end of this season, the Dutch manager could be sacked.
Erik ten Hag has clearly failed to replicate the success from his Ajax days and this season, the Manchester United first-team is in a complete mess. After 34 games, United are sixth on the Premier League table with just 54 points against their names.
They have huffed and puffed into the FA Cup final but barring this one positive, United have nothing going their way and most of the blame has fallen on Erik ten Hag and his flawed tactics. In the 109 games that he’s been in charge at Old Trafford outfit, the manager has a points-per-game of just 1.93. Currently, they are 13 points away from the fourth spot and they have won just one out of their previous five league matches.
Many people would be sceptical about him taking charge of a team like Bayern Munich but despite his poor acts this season, Erik ten Hag might actually find success at the Allianz Arena.
For starters, the Bundesliga is a far less competitive league than the EPL so ETH will have the chance to make the players familiar with his tactics. In England, Ten Hag was expected to be impactful from the very first matchweek and because he was never backed with the proper signings, the Dutch manager never had the opportunity to do everything his way.
Also, this season, Ten Hag has been really unfortunate with injuries and up until the first week of April, United have suffered 30 separate injuries and this number has grown in the previous month. Players like Mason Mount, Mainoo, Varane and Casemiro have missed large chunks of the campaign while others like Luke Shaw, Malacia and Anthony Martial have spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch. So many injuries is perhaps a big reason why the manager has not been able to deploy the tactics that he would want his team to play.
The third and perhaps the most critical thing that will help Erik ten Hag at Bayern Munich is that in Germany, the media is far less scrutinising. In England, every decision that Ten Hag has taken at Man United has been heavily debated and criticized and the negative buzz amplifies every time they drop points. The German media is far more relaxed and as compared to the Premier League, Erik ten Hag is going to get a lot more space in Germany.
Having said all this, these are just initial reports and we are sure that Bayern Munich are discussing other names along with Erik ten Hag as well. Also, Ajax are keeping tabs on the manager’s situation at Manchester United because they are eager to bring him back to the club in the summer.
If Manchester United find a suitable replacement they won’t hesitate in sacking Erik ten Hag and despite United’s poor form this season, ETH has the capability of taking over Thomas Tuchel.
